There are only about 1,500 native speakers of Arrernte in the world today. This picture dictionary was compiled by Neil Broad with the help of linguists and native speakers. Its main purpose is to aid Australian teachers in helping Arrente-speaking children to retain their language. The organization of the dictionary is also intended to give non-native readers a sense of the culture. Rather than being arranged alphabetically, the words are presented by topic as Arrente society organizes them. Translations are provided in a separate section as are pronunciation guides. The dictionary will interest anyone fascinated by languages and Aboriginal society. The only thing lacking is an explanation of grammatical forms.
